Testing Is Not the Place to Hope for the Best

by | Jun 11, 2026

Last week, Axsium announced our partnership with TestAssure. For me, this partnership touches on something I have seen repeatedly over more than 25 years in workforce management:

Testing is one of the most critical parts of a WFM transformation.

It is also one of the most underestimated.

Customers invest heavily in technology. They invest in design, configuration, integrations, change management, and training. Everyone agrees testing matters. But when timelines tighten, testing is often the first area where teams try to make up time.

That is where the risk begins.

Too often, I hear versions of this:

“We have a testing team.”

“Our end users can test it.”

“Our payroll team knows what to look for.”

“Our managers will validate the scenarios.”

And all of that may be true.

But having people who can test is not the same as having a testing strategy.

WFM Testing is Different

Workforce management testing is not just checking whether a screen works or a button opens. It is validating real business outcomes.

It is making sure the system handles things like:

  • Complex pay rules
  • Scheduling policies
  • Meal and break rules
  • Overtime scenarios
  • Union or local compliance requirements
  • Accruals and time off rules
  • Manager approvals
  • Employee exceptions
  • Integrations to payroll and HR systems
  • Real-world operational scenarios that never fit neatly into one test script

This is where the system meets the business.

And in workforce management, a missed issue is rarely just a system issue. It can quickly become a payroll issue, a compliance issue, an operational issue, and an employee trust issue.

The Biggest Mistake is Assuming the Business Can “Just Test It”

End users are essential. They understand the business, the nuances, and when something feels off.

They need to be involved. But they cannot carry the entire testing effort.

Most business users are already managing full workloads. They do not have unlimited time carved out to build scripts, execute scenarios, document results, retest fixes, and manage defects. Even when they have the right knowledge, they often do not have the right structure, tools, or capacity.

That is when testing becomes reactive.

Issues get tracked in spreadsheets. Updates happen in side conversations. Retesting gets rushed. Leadership loses visibility. Decisions start getting made based on hope instead of readiness.

And hope is not a testing plan.

Testing Needs Discipline

A strong testing approach needs to be planned early and treated as a critical workstream. That means being clear on:

  • What business scenarios carry the most risk
  • Who owns testing across the project
  • Which users need to participate and when
  • How much time is truly carved out for testing
  • What environments and data are required
  • How defects will be logged, prioritized, resolved, and retested
  • How leadership will know if the organization is ready for go-live

These are not end-of-project questions. They shape the success of the entire implementation.

Testing needs time. It needs structure. It needs accountability. It also needs tools that make the work repeatable, visible, and scalable.

Why the Axsium and TestAssure Partnership Matters

TestAssure brings purpose-built automation for workforce management testing. Their platform supports consistency and speed through capabilities like pre-built test libraries, automated test generation, defect tracking, and real-time reporting.

Axsium brings deep WFM expertise, implementation experience, and a practical understanding of how complex environments actually operate.

Together, we help customers move away from manual, spreadsheet-heavy testing toward a structured and scalable approach.

That matters because testing is not just about going live. It is about staying live with confidence.

WFM environments are constantly changing. Policies evolve. Labor rules shift. Vendors release updates. Customers grow, restructure, and optimize.

Testing cannot be a one-time event. It has to become an embedded discipline.

The Axsium Way

At Axsium, we believe successful workforce management transformation requires more than technology. It requires strategy, governance, process, tools, and people who understand both the system and the business.

Testing is no different.

You need business involvement, but you also need structure.

You need end-user input, but you also need repeatable scenarios.

You need timelines, but you also need realistic testing windows.

You need issue resolution, but you also need visibility and accountability.

You need confidence before go-live, and you need a way to maintain that confidence after go-live.

This is the opportunity with Axsium and TestAssure.

We are helping customers think differently about testing. Not as a final task before go-live, but as a critical part of implementation success, ongoing optimization, managed services, compliance readiness, and long-term WFM stability.

After more than 25 years in this industry, I can say this with confidence:

Testing is not the place to cut corners. It is not the place to hope the business can squeeze it in. It is not the place to rely on manual effort alone.

Testing deserves strategy. It deserves tools. It deserves time. It deserves talent. And it deserves attention from the very beginning.

That is why this partnership matters.
